Figure 5: Time development of the magnitude of surface stress from LT=6:00 to 18:00 every 10 minutes. The blue and light blue lines show instantaneous maximum and horizontal mean value respectively. The orange and red lines show the minimum and maximum value of threshold surface stress required to raise dust from the surface (Greeley and Iversen, 1985).


Figure 5 shows diurnal change of the magunitude of surface stress calculated from the lowest level horizontal wind velocity by using the bulk formula (Louis, 1979). The maximum value of horizontal mean surface stress is around 0.005 Pa. However, the instantaneous maximum value of surface stress at each grid point reaches 0.03 to 0.04 Pa, which are the minimum and maximum value of threshold surface stress required to raise dust from the surface (Greeley and Iversen, 1985).
